Secto Automotive Rally Finland goes back (and looks) to the future

*Finland’s WRC counter confirmed for the summer once again

*Long-standing event to help showcase world rallying’s new sustainable era

*Date within holiday period will make it easier for more fans to attend

Finland’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship will take place in the summer once again with confirmation that the fast and famous forest roads around Jyväskylä will host the WRC from August 4-7, 2022.

Today’s meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Paris confirmed Secto Automotive Rally Finland as round 8 of next season’s championship after this year’s event was pushed back to October in line with organiser AKK Sports’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the 70th anniversary edition earlier this month was a huge success and showcased the spectacular countryside of central Finland in the beauty of autumn, a return to summer will allow more fans – including families – to attend during what is the traditional holiday period.

As well as marking the start of the two-year contract period between AKK Sports and WRC Promoter for the right for Secto Automotive Rally Finland to form part of the World Rally Championship calendar in 2022 and 2023, next season signals the beginning of the WRC’s new and exciting sustainable era. Not only will the new-generation Rally1 cars be capable of running entirely on electric power on sections of the event route, they will also use 100 per cent sustainable fuel. Meanwhile, some of the power supplied to the Paviljonki service park in Jyväskylä will come from renewable energy sources.

Riku Bitter, CEO, AKK Sports Oy, said: “We are super-happy the 71st edition of Rally Finland will be organised in the summer for what will be a very significant moment for the event and the FIA World Rally Championship in general due to the introduction of hybrid technology in the all-new Rally1 cars and the use of sustainable fuel. This year we were proud to organise Arctic Rally Finland Powered by CapitalBox in the winter and Secto Automotive Rally Finland in the autumn, but now we can look forward to organising a summer rally once again and to the continuation of the long-running Rally Finland success story.

Details of ticket sales, hospitality packages and route information will be announced in due course.
